It sounds like a bad sailor’s song. “Not again with the bloody sea hum Morris!” I met with Azimuth and checked out then neat watches.

The Xtreme-1 collection includes three new Azimuth watch models. This includes the SEA-HUM 3TZ (three time zones), the SEA-HUM GMT, and the Xtreme Deep Diver (with the latter being the best or worst watch depending on how you see it).

The collection is done in honor of a Mexican explorer Fernando Lozano. I am not sure who he really is or what he does, but he climbs real high, and dives real low. Maybe if I was a Latin spelunker I would know who he was a bit better. He says that he needs a watch like this, does that mean you need one as well? Probably.

SEA-HUM 3TZ and GMT are basically the same watch in style but have a durability differences. Style changes are pretty much all summed up in the bezel and the colors on the dial. The GMT has a diver’s bezel, while the 3TZ has a 24 hour scale bezel. Using the hands, GMT hand, and 24 hour bezel, you can track three timezones with the 3TZ watch. This model is also the most entry level of the bunch.

Then there is the really weird watch. The Azimuth Xtreme-1 Diver. This could either be Bell & Ross cool, or just plain too instrument like to wear. This is odd coming from such a “big watch” guy, but that literally looks like it would be a tank on your wrist. It only looks proper if you are wearing the hardest core diving or hazmat suits. Azimuth says that the Xtreme-1 is for the most extreme sports enthusiasts – not sure what that means unless it comes with complimentary helicopter medical evac services no matter where you are in the world. The watches I saw were still in the prototype phase, but looking good. Good all purpose divers and outdoorsy watches. Heavy and rugged – they are for the guy who likes to venture with a full load of gear.

The only true sweeping seconds hand is on a Seiko Spring Drive watch (as far as I know)  – though perhaps on a tuning fork movement (I just don’t know enough about those). Anyhow, Gronefeld worked to ensure that friction was really low in the movement to promote accuracy.

Thinking about dead-beat second watches is interesting. They really date back to old pendulum clocks that ticked once per a second as well. So you can consider the One Hertz to be just like that, a pendulum on your wrist. The G-02 movement is going to be pretty interesting, and I am amazed that Gronefeld put this much work in to developing it for a watch that is limited to just 12 pieces. Oh, and it will have a power reserve of 60 hours. If you are wondering, the “1912″ part of the piece’s name comes from the date when Tim and Bart’s grandfather first became a qualified watch maker. I think just calling it One Hertz would have been enough, but you have to send a shout-out to family right?

As a watch, the One Hertz will have a 43mm wide steel case with a style that resembles the seminal Gronefeld watch. The classic looking lugs suddenly feel modern when combined with the very contemporary looking dial. I can’t wait to see what that circular grain polish on the dials looks like when the watch is done. It also looks like the marker ring for the seconds dial is smoked sapphire. This will be one interesting (and rare) timepiece from Gronefeld. Like I said, only 12 pieces will be available of the limited edition One Hertz 1912 watch. It is a risky move for the young brand, as dead-beat second mechanisms seemed to die with the quartz movement crisis/revolution. But then again, people today are always looking for something different, and I find it hard to imagine that there aren’t 12 loyal (and wealthy) watch lovers out there that are gonna get excited about this piece. Price is 29,500 euros (before taxes).

Bvlgari, err… Bulgari always looks better in all caps right? While I have been seeing lots of confused designs from Bulgari as of late, this Diagono X-Pro is something I am not at all confused about liking (which is to say that I do like it). The cool masculine watch takes a few lessons from the polished looks of the Bulgari design play book, and adds a testosterone powered stamp of approval on it. When it comes down to it, while this is a great watch in and of itself, it feels like Bulgari’s answer to the Hublot Big Bang. Not only in design, but also when it comes to the “fusion” of materials. Bulgari knows that with its performance over the last few years and the current economy, it can’t dick around. It needs to give people what they want – which is apparently still luxury sport watches.

One thing that is hard to tell is that the middle section of the case is actually all black – all DLC black for that matter. Now even Bulgari is on the DLC bandwagon. Another wave goodbye to PVD. Just part of this complex case. Below you will see an “explosion” image of the case – which is made out of 104 parts. I love it that some watch cases are 2 or 3 parts, and some are over 100 parts. The most complex case winner is still the Nubeo Black Mamba. The Diagono X-Pro is 45mm wide, with a case made out of steel, DLC coated steel, and titanium. There is also rubber coatings on the crown and chronograph pushers (in addition to the rubber strap). The front and back of the watch have sapphire crystals (front crystal is highly AR coated).

Now things get interesting with sapphire… the dial is sapphire as well. Black colored sapphire with three levels of superimposed elements on it. It should have glass-like finish to it, without too much glare, and the white numerals and hour indicators should “pop” really nicely. Hints of red color add to the sporty appeal. In addition to elements from other Bulgari designs, and Hublot, there is a little bit of Richard Mille influence in the mix.I have a feeling the dial will turn out to be quite great looking.

Aside from the fancy case and design, the movement is quite interesting. A hybrid of in-house elements and use of ‘ol reliable – the Valjoux 7750. What Bulgari does is build on the Valjoux 7750 to create the Calibre BVL 312. Lots of stock ETA parts from the 7750 are replaced, and a special module is built on the movement giving it a GMT hand. The modifications also serve to include a column wheel transfer in the movement for the chronograph. Plus, the movement is COSC Chronometer certified. Set in a tri-compax array, the chronograph is easy to see with a red hand for the subsidiary seconds dial for the main time. The GMT hand is attracting and easy to read. I like the large lume covered hour and minute hands, but feel that they are just shy of being long enough. Design wise, the watch and dial look like a mix of diver, pilot, and military style – all with that Bulgari twist.

You can see that the rotating GMT bezel offers the ability to track a third timezone, and is also two-toned, giving the night hours a dark color, and the daylight hours a lighters color. I also like the movable lug structures that attach to the rubber strap. Overall the Bulgari Diagono X-Pro is a great watch with a neat character, and appeal for me that I haven’t seen lately from Bulgari. Price isn’t going to be very kind I am sure. I am going to guess between $10,000 – $20,000.

I am talking about this watch because people are going to notice it and wonder, “what is going on here?” Well nothing really fancy to be honest, aside from some engineering gear fun. While the concept of a clover and square shaped gear might be odd, it works. You can see in the video exactly how if you aren’t too mechanically minded. Maurice Lacroix talks about the watch as though they just invented a time machine – but luxury brands are all about hyperbole, so I can forgive them (to an extent). Ahem, have a listen: “Maurice Lacroix has chosen its flagship Masterpiece line to open a new dimension in watchmaking” (I giggle and snicker). “This is a response to the brand’s ambition to take design and the mastery of watchmaking even further.” Wow… OK Maurice Lacroix all this for a few gears? I mean the watch is neat looking, but it doesn’t really offer a dynamic change to the game.

Movement is a Maurice Lacroix made ML 153 manually wound movement which is in-house made. It has 48 hours of power reserve, is a regulator with a power reserve indicator, and a gear/disc for reading the hours. The clover gear moves the square gear that has an opening and small SuperLumiNova tipped hand in it that points to one of the hours on the hour scale. Minutes are read by the centrally mounted hand, and there is a subsidiary seconds dial below. The dial is a cool looking etched surface that has been cut using some pretty fancy techniques.

Case is 43.5mm wide and in steel, with polished and satin surfaces. It does actually look quite nice, as does the dial – that would look good if they were to give it a bit more of a traditional looking watch face. There is also a fair amount of lume for actually reading the watch – which is good. Does a piece like this fit into Maurice Lacroix brand DNA? A bit, but many of their pieces go right outside the box.

It isn’t my favorite watch, but it is fun to see in action, although I wish that the gears moved a bit faster. Can’t the external gear system have been part of the seconds hand, and not the hour indicator? Oh well. The Maurice Lacroix Regulator Roue Carree watch will be limited to just 99 pieces, and I have a feeling will cost significantly more than I would want to pay give its designer status and coming with an in-house movement.

•The hour and power-reserve indications at 3 o’clock are engraved on the main plate

•The small seconds hand at 6 o’clock, just as the Square Wheel and cloverleaf are highlighted through a circular opening in the main plate itself and decorated with a sandblasted background.

•Available exclusively in “black gold” with a vertical satin finish

Power is transmitted between the cloverleaf and square wheels with an efficiency equivalent to that of a traditional wheel.

First thing I thought of when I saw these new watches from Breitling was “wow, these are pretty big.” They even wear larger than their ‘mere’ 45mm wide steel case would suggest. Probably because the case is on the flatter, broader side of things. This is Breitling’s newest watch to bear the ETA SuperQuartz COSC Chronometer certified movement – in the wonderful lineage of the Breitling Aerospace. The Chronospace is larger, has more going on, and is arguably easier to use than the watch it is distantly based on. The movement is the Breitling Calibre 78 (base ETA), and has lots of cool functions. These include time, 1/100 of  second chronograph (with actually pushers as opposed to having to dig in the menu with the scrolling crown pusher), alarm, calendar, countdown timer, GMT time, and second timezone display. All in a really nice quality, dial LCD screen display in addition to the time and chronograph hand on the main time. Having that chronograph hand there makes it possible to use some of the more traditional chronograph functions, and I believe perhaps some of the slide-rule functions.

A slide rule it does have,  and also “night vision compatibility.” Something about the backlighting system of the watch and LCD screens make them viewable through night vision goggles (NVG) – which apparently was something in demand…? Breitling says that the watch has a double sectioned caseback that works to amplify the alarm sound to about 90 decibels. They call this the “resonance chamber.” Which actually is useful if you need the alarm in anywhere but the quietest place – an environment an airplane cockpit is not.

At first the large 3 and 9 o’clock indicators on the dial are a bit much. The watch feels like a toy. This is one area where I wonder if Breitling could have done better. But you do eventually get over that, and if you do, you’ll notice lots of other good qualities about the watch. Any timepiece with a thermocompensated quartz movement is rewarding, as they are super accurate (like 5-10 seconds a year). The hour indicators are large, and covered in a long of lume, and the hour and minute hand are highly distinct. This is because the minute hand is longer in two directions. The crystal is domed sapphire with lots of AR coating, so legibility overall is excellent.

The watch comes with four dial colors and three strap options. You have Volcano Black, Mariner Blue, Tungsten Gray, and Stratus Silver. They are available with a mesh metal bracelet, pilot leather strap, and diver style rubber strap. A very useful watch from Breitling with an odd looking fitting its functional forward attitude.
