Reed Diffusers – How To Fill Your Home With Fragrance

It is obvious to anybody that you are using a fragrance reed diffuser in your home the minute they step over the door. Reed diffusers allow you to enjoy the scent of your chosen essential oil in its purest form, unaffected by heat or smoke.

Many people use scented candles, and these are also a fabulous way of giving your home a marvelous smell, but many prefer the pure smell of a reed diffuser. So what is a fragrance reed diffuser, and how does it differ from a candle or an oil burner or evaporator? The idea could not be any easier and operates in the same way as an oil evaporator, except that reeds are use to absorb the oil and diffuse the fragrance.

The diffuser consists of a number of reeds that act as the wicks. Reeds, such as rattan, are essential since they have an absorbent honeycomb structure, unlike wood or bamboo. Neither wood nor bamboo are suitable for use as diffusers, because their structure is too dense and does not permit sufficient absorbance of the oil.  Those who use wooden barbecue skewers or even toothpicks as reeds have no understanding of the science behind what are doing.

The oil itself should be specifically intended as fragrance oil for reed diffusers and will generally have a low molecular weight so that the size of the molecule doesn’t prevent it absorption in to the structure of the reed. You must use fragrant essential oils for your reed diffuser – most other oils simply will not work, because they are too heavy to be absorbed properly through the reeds.

Around 10-12 narrow reeds are normally used, and placed into a bottle containing the light fragrant oil. The fragrant oil in a reed diffuser travels up the reeds by capillary action and is then transferred into the air through the reed stems. It is a delicate, unadulterated fragrance, with no flame or smoke being involved. The fragrance is delightfully fresh as long as you use oils designed specifically for reed diffusers – normal fragrance oils, such as you would use in an evaporator or burner, are too heavy and thick to be of much use in such a diffuser.

It was stated earlier that you cannot dilute fragrant oils with other cheap oils in order, and in the same way you also cannot add some fragrant light aromatherapy carrier oil to them to achieve the same thing:  that does not reduce the molecular size of the oil molecules, just dilutes it so that the reed acts as a filter allowing the lighter scent-free oil to be absorbed but not the fragrant essential oil.  Reed oils are chosen for their absorption properties as well as their fragrance.

You can use a relatively low molecular weight substance that is compatible with oils, such as dipropylene glycol, but you will need to make sure of this and that you don’t ruin your oil with anything that will clog up the pores of the reeds.  It requires an experienced fragrance chemist, familiar with the chemical nature of fragrant oils, to properly formulate oils suitable for fragrance reed diffusers.

The reeds you use should be cut to about twice the height of the bottle so that half the reed is in the bottle and half out of it, and your bottle can be anything from half full to full of oil. The amount of oil you use is a matter of judgement. If you do not use enough the reed will not become properly infused with the fragrance or else the diffuser will run out prematurely. So a 10 inch bottle can be filled from 5 inches up to 10 inches with oil and the reeds should be cut to 20 inches. A six inch bottle should contain 12 inch reeds, and so on.

A final tip is never to reuse reeds. Although it might appear that you should be able to do that, oils thicken with time and the air in your room can also contain dust, so the reeds can become clogged up with oil and dust and prevent proper absorption.

Among the advantages that a reed diffuser offers over scented candles is the fact there is no flame, and hence no fire hazard, and it therefore cannot go out. Because they operate without the need for heat or power they are more convenient than electrical diffusers which need an electric socket to work properly. There is also no need to heat the oil in a reed diffuser. The diffuser works by capillary action so you enjoy the fragrant oil in its purest form.

What are the benefits of fragrance diffusers; why do people use them? One of the main benefits of using a reed diffuser at home is it’s ability to freshen a room’s atmosphere, masking any lingering stale odours..  However, they are also calming and soothing. People will use fragrance reed diffusers in the same way that others will use incense sticks or cones. They are a simple pleasure of life just as a hot relaxing bath is after a hard day at work.  You don’t have to justify it, just enjoy it.

Using a fragrant reed diffuser in your home can provide a relaxing and satisfying end to a long day.Armed with a chilled glass of your favourite wine and an enjoyable read, what better way could you imagine to end a busy day?

Why Use Home Fragrances?

Our sense of smell is arguably the sense most closely associated with the memory and as such has a constant effect on our daily lives. Did you know that we breathe in more than 23,000 times each day and with every breath there is an opportunity for our sense of smell to trigger memories of people or places long forgotten or lurking deep within the furthest recesses of our memory? The gorgeous aromas of home fragrances help freshen up your home and can even evoke memories of special places or times.

Like so many things nowadays, the world of home fragrances tends to follow distinct trends. Life has never been more hectic so it’s not surprising that there is a perceived benefit these days in any product which can aid relaxation or help you “chill out”.

By using natural aromas derived from plants or other botanicals home fragrances, whether they take the form of scented candles or reed diffusers, can help promote a feeling of wellbeing and calm. But home fragrances do not need to be used just to help you relax. By the use of invigorating scents such as citrus, or spices such as cinnamon or ginger, home fragrances can be used to stimulate, soothe or aid memory.

In short there is a home fragrance which can be used for every mood or situation.

So how do you go about choosing the perfect fragrance? Take care when choosing fragrances for your home, to ensure that they compliment one another and do not clash. Try to layer fragrances in the home in the same way you would do with personal scent, using scented candles or reed diffusers which enhance each other. Whether you choose a scented candle or a fragrance diffuser will depend on a number of factors, not least convenience. A scented candle is ideal if you are looking for a short term burst of fragrance which lasts for a few hours and which you can control easily. On the other hand, if your preference is for something more subtle and long-lasting, then a scented reed diffuser, which will fragrance your room continuously for many months, would be the perfect choice.

So what are the choices of fragrance available and what particular benefits do they offer?

Firstly let’s consider those aromas found in food – the “edible” fragrances.  Certain natural aromas such as vanilla, cinnamon or ginger may evoke memories of favourite foods, perhaps recalling lazy afternoons spent with Mum, baking in the kitchen. The memories associated with these fragrances can help create deep feelings of wellbeing and comfort, harking back to simpler days.

Next come the “floral” scents. Candles and  reed diffusers are available in an enormous range of floral fragrances, including freesia, jasmine and the ever-popular rose. These light, fragrant aromas are a great way to bring the freshness and the warmth of a summer garden into your home on even the dullest of winter days.

Next up are what are termed the “fresh” scents, redolent of the great outdoors and reflecting the current trend for healthier lifestyles and “green” living. These fresh, clean scents are often inspired by nature and the elements, for example, rainfall or snow, or by aromatic herbs and plants such as thyme or clover. These aromas are capable of lifting the mood and leaving you feeling invigorated, just as if you had  taken a long walk along the seashore or through the countryside.

Last, but not least, are the “spice” fragrances. Rich aromas derived from the spice market help create a feeling of warmth and comfort and are increasingly popular, particularly when the weather turns colder. At this time of year, when there is little in the way of sunshine, its lovely to be able to savour the rich aromas of spices and exotic plants such as those found in scents such as ginger or bergamot. These comforting aromas help create an oasis of calm and tranquillity, especially if the wind is howling or the rain lashing outside!

So no matter how you feel – or no matter what you want to do – there’s a home fragrance out there that will suit your needs perfectly. Be warned – its not easy choosing just one fragrances from the vast array out there. If the choice is too bewildering, why not go for a combination of aromas to make up your own individual home fragrance?!

REVIEWS: Samsung HT-C7550W Blu-ray home cinema system

Home cinema hassle

Samsung HT-C7550W Blu-ray home cinema system. Home Cinema, Blu-ray players, Home Cinema systems, Samsung, Samsung HT-C7550W 0

There are a lot of reasons why all-in-one soundbars are fast replacing home cinema systems, and the HT-C7550W is one of them. Built around a superb Blu-ray player and featuring online content, a pair of wireless surround speakers and an iPod dock, this otherwise traditional 5.1 system’s first impressions are not good.

Comprising a tiny centre speaker, four surround speakers and a subwoofer, there’s an over reliance on black moulded plastic that will jar with almost all interiors. If you plan to use them in a dark room reserved only for your home cinema, so be it, but don’t think the HT-C7550W will look great in a magnolia-walled living room.

Even if you can swallow its bleak styling, there are lots of problems before a home cinema results. The main victim is time, and lots of it. After delicately unwrapping around fifty individual components from the vast polystyrene packaging, it took us around 2 hours to set-up the system. Halfway through attaching each plastic parking meter-esque speaker to more black plastic, a metal pole and an ugly base disc, a career change was loudly discussed.

The end result from a package that relies on around six screws per speaker that are slightly too big is an array of less-than-rigid speakers as flimsy as they initially looked; a decent screwdriver and some elbow grease is essential. The four surround speakers also don’t have flat bottoms, so can’t be put on a shelf; that “tall boy” look is inescapable.

The one small saving grace in an otherwise inflexible packable is that the HT-C7550W isn’t actually difficult to construct – apart from those damned screws, that is. The rear of the Blu-ray player-come-amplifier is nicely labelled with coloured slots for each speaker cable, which does make connecting the speakers almost foolproof.

That unit outputs sound to the centre, left and right speakers, as well as to the subwoofer. It also sends rear channel audio to a separate receiver, a black box the size of a PlayStation One that can be plugged into the mains at the rear of a room; the two rear channel speakers are then attached from here, negating the need to trail cables across the lounge. To call this system wire-free would be a mistake, but clusters of cables at either end of a room is easier to stomach.

Away from the frustrating set-up, the HT-C7550W is an impressive – though slightly overpriced – home cinema system.

The Blu-ray player at its core gets a glowing mention; inside is 1GB of storage for BD Live downloads, a full roster of Samsung’s Internet@TV online content channels, All Share DLNA streaming (both of these features can work over wired Ethernet to a router, or through the included Wi-Fi USB dongle), a 15-second boot-up and an iPod/iPhone dock as an accessory.

A few more issues; the touch commands on the main unit’s front aren’t sensitive enough, and the disc tray closed of its own accord while we were trying to load a Blu-ray disc.

On the rear on the unit are Component video inputs, two HDMI inputs (so the unit can act as a switcher and take feeds from a set-top box and games console before outputting everything to a TV) and a HDMI output.

Most of these features are covered in Samsung Blu-ray player reviews elsewhere, though the iPod/iPhone dock is new to us. Consisting of a separate, wired iPod cradle that accepts – and charges – all iPhone models, it attaches to the rear of the Blu-ray unit. Once chosen as a source on the main menu, music, photos and videos stored on the iPod/iPhone are treated as if it was a USB stick or drive, with a simple file directory displayed on the TV screen; not particularly sophisticated, its inclusion in the package is certainly laudable.

The home cinema speakers themselves are easy to calibrate, with a small microphone placed in the seating position automatically adjusting the levels of each surround channel.

Performance-wise the HT-C7550W does a good job with multichannel movies and excels with music. There’s plenty of fine detailing, and though treble highs can sound a little bright, the front speakers generally create an involving and well-balanced sound field. The subwoofer isn’t the most precise we’ve heard, but the rear speakers are accurately driven by the wireless receiver and never drop out of range – in fact, they need no attention whatsoever.

The HT-C7550W’s Blu-ray player also impresses, with bold, nuanced colours and smooth judder-free playback; our only criticism is that the deck’s orientation makes it suitable only for a tabletop – it simply won’t fit on a rack.

Verdict:

Almost painful to unpack and construct, the HT-C7550W is why much simpler plug-and-play soundbars have done so well in recent years, but this package’s inclusion of a multi-functional Blu-ray player, iPod dock and wireless streaming will attract many – as will the wireless rear speakers. Sporting a cheap looking build quality and a slightly impractical Blu-ray player design, the HT-C7550W can only have niche appeal, but its detailed and powerful surround sound easily trumps a soundbar. If you’ve got the patience, the comprehensive HT-C7550W package can be rewarding, but the “all-in-one” tag makes this system sound more convenient than it is.

REVIEWS: Humax HDR-Fox T2

High-def home hub?

Humax HDR-Fox T2 . Home Cinema, Freeview+HD, Set top boxes, PVRs, Humax, Humax HDR-FOX T2 0

Ever since Freeview HD began hosting three free-to-air high-def channels the chase has been on to deliver the ultimate piece of hardware. But while simple Freeview HD receivers have impressed with their pretty pictures, only a recorder can truly improve your daily life.

And that’s exactly what Humax’ latest does. There has been a slew of Freeview HD recorders of late from the likes of Panasonic, Digital Stream, Sharp and Samsung, but not all include Freeview+ functionality. That’s crucial since Freeview+ introduces series links and scheduling from the EPG; in short, it brings the freedom that a recorder should.

And there are few products that offer as much freedom as the HDR-Fox T2. Following on from its simple and successful forbear, the HD-Fox T2, this far larger incarnation introduces a 500GB hard disk for making recordings. That’s around 125 hours of high-def recordings from the three HD channels, or 300 hours of SD.

On the rear is the all-important HDMI output, flanked by ports for USB, Ethernet LAN, a Scart, Composite video, analogue audio and optical audio – the latter capable of taking Freeview HD’s native HE-AAC sound and changing it into the Dolby Digital surround sound before outputting it to a 5.1 amplifier or home cinema system. That’s a rare feature on rival boxes (to our knowledge Philips is the only other brand to feature Dolby Digital on its Freeview HD gear – as found on its DTR-5520 Freeview HD receiver).

There’s a further USB slot on the front of the unit (as well as a CI slot for Top-Up TV viewing cards), and a good job, too; a Wi-Fi USB adaptor is available from Humax, which will obviously permanently occupy the rear’s USB port, though you could argue that Wi-Fi should be built-in.

From external USB drives or sticks a plethora of file formats can be played. Although WMV files aren’t recognised, almost everything else we tried was – including DivX HD (MKV) files and even VOB files, an improvement on the HD-Fox T2’s frustrating file compatibility. A nice media player deals with MP3s, though, oddly, WMA music files are treated as video files (though they play without problems). Files can also be transferred to the hard disk after a relatively simple process. If you think physical media is just too pass?, this unit’s Ethernet (or Wi-Fi adaptor) enables these same files to be streamed from a PC or Mac. That Ethernet is also set to deliver online content services such as Sky Player.

It’s not all good news, however; playing digital media necessitates choosing whether you want to playback media from wither the hard disk or USB, and also whether you want to play video, music or photos – not a major issue, perhaps, though not being able to just play whatever, whenever can become a little tiresome.

It is, however, the user interface and 8-day electronic programme guide that are at the core of this box’s brilliance. Showing seven channels across 2 hours, series links and single recordings can be set in seconds from an interface that’s as fast as it is good-looking, with excellent use of high-res graphics and nuanced colours.

This slick approach carries on with HD channels, which are presented in glorious HD and with plenty of colour and contrast to keep the detail company, though we did lose reception for the HD channels (only) for a short period, suggesting that this product’s tuner isn’t as sensitive as it could be. Switch to a normal TV channel and quality takes a dive; the HDR-Fox T2 isn’t as skilled an upscaler as it should be. Recordings, meanwhile, are identical to the original broadcast and a delight to skip through using the excellent lightweight remote, though there are no editing functions.?

Verdict:

For the most part a joy to use, this slick and speedy set-top box/home hub’s Freeview+ functionality is perhaps as important as its high-def ambitions and puts it alongside the likes of Sky+ and Virgin V+ on sheer ease of use. It does lack a third tuner – as all Freeview HD recorders do – but trumps its rivals by adding DivX HD and Dolby Digital support. It may look similar to other Freeview HD recorders on the market, but presentation is key and Humax’s concentration on its user interface has once again paid-off – this is the finest product in its category.

Vacuuming with the Roomba Makes Cleaning a Breeze

The iRobot Roomba Silver is the single best purchase I have made for our household lately. At first, I have to admit that I was a little bit skeptical about this very small vacuum being able to do a good job picking up pet hair and other dirt in my home. After just a few cleaning passes, the iRobot Roomba Silver proved me wrong.

In our home, we have two white haired dogs. Both dogs lose a lot of hair and maintaining a clean home can be really hard work. The vacuum we had before had to go over the area a few times to do an adequate job of cleaning up the pet hair. However, the iRobot Roomba Silver, has tiny brushes under the bottom that appear to have an easy time cleaning up the pet hair. Also my dogs are accustomed to watching it roll around the floor. They look at it as it passes by, so it gives them a little entertainment, I believe.

I think the thing I like best about this vacuum is that I can arrange for it to clean when I’m actually out of the house. I leave for my job realizing that when I return, Roomba will have finished vacuuming and cleaning my floors. It’s a real time-saver and spirit-lifter knowing I’m coming home from a tiring day on the job to a clean floor.

As I initially powered it up and switched it on, the Roomba navigated about the room figuring out its configuration. From that point on, the only thing I need to do is adjust the cleaning timetable setting and let the iRobot Roomba Silver take it from there. Another bonus is it’s so tiny that it’s able to maneuver beneath tables and furniture I used to need to move.

Right now, there are several different generations of these vacuuming miracles available to try. The iRobot Roomba 410 is capable of cleaning two rooms on a single charge. If the battery gets low or when the cleaning is complete, the Roomba just simply finds its way back to its charger. The one I really want to get next is the iRobot Roomba 560. You can schedule up to seven different cleaning times for the week and the 560 will clean up to four rooms without needing to be charged again.

In general, I would say that investing in iRobot Roomba Silver is good and profitable. From time to time, I use a regular vacuum and I could feel my lower back can really begin to hurt, but when I started Roomba I could see a good feel that it does not hurt anything. The Roomba could even clean my floors and my carpet, and all I have to do is press a button. I would definitely recommend this!

REVIEWS: Onkyo TX-NR808

Future-proof your home cinema
Onkyo TX-NR808 . Home Cinema, AV receivers, Onkyo, onkyo TX-NR808 0

Onkyo is the market leader in AV amplifiers and receivers for good reason. It has, for the last few years at least, crammed its kit with as much tech as it can possibly fit in, whilst keeping prices at very reasonable levels. The end result is a rapidly growing fan base of Onk die-hards. And, after sampling the awesome delights of the company’s 2010 mid-range refresh – in the guise of the TX-NR808 AV receiver – it’s easy to see (and hear) why.

For starters, it teases a specification list that could be the AV geek’s equivalent to Playboy: THX Select2 Plus certification … phwoar! Audyssey DSX and Dolby Pro Logic IIz processing for extra front channels … whoof! Internet radio and music streaming capabilities … hubba hubba! And, 7 HDMI inputs, 2 out … excuse me a second…

Of course, these aren’t features specifically unique to Onkyo – after all, other receivers from rival manufacturers offer similar spec. But, rarely do they sit alongside 7.2 channels (at 180 Watts per channel claimed), a front-mounted USB port that accepts iPod / iPhone input (with album artwork), and complete 3D compatibility (each and every one of its HDMI sockets being v1.4a). Even if they did, there is no way that they’d each be available for under a grand.

Admittedly, at ?999, the 808 is only a solitary pound under, but at least you could treat yourself to three cans of Lilt from Poundland, so that sort-of counts. And, seeing as it feels and behaves like equipment much higher up the food chain, as lofty as it sounds, its price tag is a veritable bargain.

THX-certification certainly isn’t thrown about willy-nilly, for instance, and often adds a few shekels onto the ticket. But, should you have a compatible speaker set-up, its presence will help you experience immediate and impressive benefits to performance. And that’s just a mere tip of the added-value iceberg…

We’ve always been massive fans of the Audyssey MultEQ room set-up and acoustic correction feature, and it makes a welcome return here. Using an included microphone, it helps in finding the ultimate sonic settings for your specific viewing room and speaker setup. All you have to do is run through the easy-to-navigate wizard and your receiver is perfectly tuned. Techno- and audiophiles may want to tweak further, and the well-served menu system offers such delights, but the rest of us will be more than happy with its automated guessing.

Then there’s its inclusion of the new audio processing formats, Audyssey DSX and Dolby Pro Logic IIz – which use dedicated rear-mounted outputs for additional speakers – to add to an already impressive list of codecs and processing modes.

Both of the new additions utilise extra front channels, giving either height or horizontal length to the primary, front-facing soundstage. In short, they each create a wall of sound coming from the place you’d most want it – where your TV or projection screen is situated – rather than add superfluous discrete rear channels. It’s a new-fangled idea for home cinema, but seems to be catching on rapidly.

Also, as previously mentioned, this is one of the first receivers, Onkyo or otherwise, that is completely compatible with 3D Blu-ray players and TVs. Former amps and comparable AV kit generally only have HDMI v1.3 sockets which, while they have enough bandwidth to pass through 3D images and sounds, can’t cope with the extra strain put one them by bang-up-to-date gear.

For example, they couldn’t also pass through the signal flags sent by a 3D Blu-ray deck to tell a compatible TV to switch to 3D mode. Everything, in that case, would have to be manipulated manually. However, with every one of its 7 in, 2 out HDMI ports being v1.4a, the 808 is fully-capable of passing through 3D content. It is, as they say, future proof.

Speaking of which, it is important to note that it is now possible to download and install firmware updates via Ethernet or USB on this Onk. We’ve had issues trying to patch a TX-SR805 in the past, which involved burning a CD and playing it through a DVD player plugged into the optical audio port – a messy business and one best forgotten – so the simplicity of the new method is highly applauded.?

As is the move to include the graphical user interface (GUI) on the HDMI feed. In basic terms, it allows you to see the receiver’s volume controls on screen without leaving whatever you’re viewing. And there’s a handy home button which brings up an onscreen menu with other video and audio options (such as image upscaling). It helps the 808 to seem more integrated with your entire home setup.

But, bells and whistles aside, the most important aspect of this receiver to many will be how it sounds, and we can honestly say that neither movie or music fans will be disappointed. That is, unless you’re looking for something more … erm … wimpy.

The TX-NR808 is the receiver equivalent of a bare-knuckle boxing match, in a dewy glade. It’s a Rottweiler that’s been prodded with a stick every day for a year until it can growl the words to Ave Maria. It happily treads the fine line of being both beautiful and savage, and we love it. A lot.

Action movie soundtracks hang in the air like carcasses in an abattoir; tangible and beefy, but naturally bewitching. Listening to the remake of Clash of the Titans on Blu-ray was like both being beaten up and licked by a puppy at the same time. And we’re sure that the floor is still resonating several days later.

Verdict:

Music too is treated with delicacy and brutal assault in equal measures. There isn’t a song we’ve found that hasn’t been improved by the 808′s handling. Even Jedward’s album turns from a turgid, pointless abuse of the human ear into a turgid, pointless abuse of the human ear with better bass response. This receiver could add meat to a vegan sausage.

If there’s one criticism it’s that, at times, it can be a bit too aggressive. Not volume-wise, that’s finely controllable, but just in its bark. Perhaps this will calm down in time, as it beds in. And, to be honest, that’s a tiny caveat for what is the most exciting and fun AV receiver we’ve seen and heard to date.
