Spotlight on Thuya Burl: Its Uses in the Making of Jewelry Box

Thuya Burl is among the many exotic woods around. It is only when you own a jewelry box made from this burl that you will be able to tell the difference. Tetraclicis Articulata is its botanical name. Found underground, this tree sprouts independently.

Morocco and the Atlas mountains are where Thuya burl is predominantly found. The meaning of the word ‘Thuya’ is sacrifice. Moroccan jewelry boxes that are made from Thuya burl are famous. This wood is the favorite of old timers in the creation of a number of items.

Early churches still use the oil extracted from this wood to burn incense. You will find it in religious ceremonies as well. Thanks to its natural fragrance, Thuya burl is also used in making furniture in a number of churches.

Some ancient churches also use jewelry chests made of Thuya burl wood to store their choir costumes. The oil distilled from it is utilized to burn incense. While working with this burl it will emit a lovely fragrance and oil as well.

Due to its exotic aroma, Greeks and Romans used this wood extensively to make their furniture. Working with this wood is easy for artisans since the grain is twisted and the wood becomes pliable once it is carved, turned and polished. When exposed to sunlight, this wood loses some of its orange tint and this is an added advantage. The wood is first dug up from under the ground and then extracted.

The stump of the tree is where the burl is found. Veneers are made from this with the lathe. Thuya based jewelry boxes come in many patterns since they are not carved but have a highly glossy appearance. These boxes are shaped into different patterns and sizes and skilled artisans work on them in a number of ways.

You will also find Thuya burl in marquetry. Compared to other hardwoods, though Thuya burl is dense, it takes to brass inlay work rather easily. You can select from a single elaborate box or a set of boxes made of Thuya burl.

To make sure you have a real burlwood box look for the original characteristics of the burl such as nicks and the grain. This will be quite useful and will give out a cedar-like aroma. Along with classy looks, your dresser will smell good too.

Many Ways to Make Jewelry Boxes For Women

Jewelry boxes for women are presents they will cherish for a life time. If you make the effort in creating these boxes yourself, they will be treasured all the more. You can make a cardboard jewelry box from any of the boxes you have lying around to be recycled. You can easily use an empty dinner set box or shoe box as well.

A decorative chain and some jewelry pliers are also what you will need. To start with, punch some holes into the lid of the box. Thread the decorative chain through the holes to form loops on the inside of the box lid. Remove the lid and measure the space inside the box.

Out of two pieces of cardboard, make a divider for the inside of the box. This way you can split it into two or four compartments as per your needs. The outside of the box can be done up in several ways. Create pretty things in origami and stick this all over the box. A stained glass look can be got by cutting different colored glass paper into varying sizes and shapes and then sticking these all over the box.

Wooden boxes are stronger in their construction. If you have worked with wood before, this would be a good material to choose. Start by sanding the wood to take off any imperfections. The hardwood of Cherry or Oak that is a quarter inch thick would do best.

Next apply two coats of acrylic paint on the outer surfaces of the wood pieces. Make sure you allow them enough drying time in between coats. After this you can create applique work out of old newspaper images or wall paper and stick this onto the box.

Bring all the cut pieces of wood together with woodworking glue. You can start by gluing the base together first. After that is done and dry, glue together the sides and the lid. The box can be finished off by gluing a mirror on the inside of the jewelry box lid.

A vintage jewelry box is something else you can make. You can use an empty circular cheese box for this. Remove all the stickers and prime the surface of the lid and the sides with primer. Paint it all over with a metallic silver or gold paint and give it time to dry.

While it is drying cut out circular pieces of velvet cloth to go inside the lid of the box, the box itself and the outer bottom too. With glue, stick these in place. Cut out a vintage scene from a magazine to fit the outer surface of the lid and stick that in place. Use brown ribbon to cover the base rim of the box.

Alternate faux beads in silver and gold on a thread and glue them onto the rim of the box around the picture. Put in place a mirror on the inside of the box and you are done.

Nothing to wait for is there? Let the creativity flow.

Jewelry Boxes: Get the Classy Touch of the French Classic Armoire

The French Armoire has a beauty to it that remains unrivaled to this day. So popular has been its design that several jewelry boxes down the ages have been inspired by their design and detail. The Latin word ‘armarium’ is where the French word Armoire was derived from.

Armoires came into being from what were originally a series of shelves that were built into the wall and closed with wings or doors. Gradually they became individual pieces that looked like a collection of chests that were stacked together with a series of doors to close them. Around the 17th century was when more attention was paid to the details on armoires.

In the beginning, these armoires were used in churches and monastries for religious purposes. Nuns used them to store books and priests had them in the sacristy to hold religious items like oil, incense, and vessels. There are still a few of these in existence like the 13th century oak piece in the Bayeux Cathedral in France

The Cathedral of Noyon also has another well preserved famous armoire from the same time. In the Vestry of York, you will see a great example of the perpendicular designs of armoires. The way these armoires were decorated too began to evolve with time. There was a serious move from painting these surfaces to carving on them.

Though Louvre had some great examples, the best ones are in the exhibits and museums of Cluny. A very popular designing element for the 16th century armoire was the linen-fold. England and America soon saw the arrival of the armoire. The armoire is classically a standalone piece of furniture, which is large and has double doors that are ornately carved.

Today, they are designed for a variety of storage purposes. There is the children’s armoire that is used as a toy cabinet. You have the entertainment armoire that is big enough to hold a TV and its paraphrenalia.

These individual armoires are also used as crockery cabinets, linen cupboards, as book shelves and more. Jewelry armoires are perhaps the prettiest of them all. These can stand on their own or can be wall mounted as well. Wooden armoires can be carved on delicately and will help store and show of your jewelry.

There are many styles to choose from. In the cottage style, the legs are turned out and the design has a colonial touch. The wood has a simple but fascinating look with its semi-gloss finish. Pieces inspired from antique armoires have turned out legs as well. The carving and the style of decor is hand crafted and beautiful.

The modern armoires resemble the classic versions in terms of shape but with a contemporary touch. In Queen Anne style armoires, designs of roses and vines are hand carved. Armoires have a wonderfully classic look to them and add to the beauty of your decor and your jewelry.

So what’s stopping you? Step out and look for the armoire that suits you best.

The fascinating Greek mythology is populated by so many interesting “Gods”. Greek Gods and Goddesses are so venerated and women wanting to please them loved to wear a lot of jewelry patterned after these Greek Gods. This also led to the popular use of exquisite jewelry boxes for women.

It’s not uncommon to see richly adorned women in various jewelry and accessories. It’s also their belief that if you wear certain types of jewelry you are able to ward off evil and bad luck. These talismans are worn by many in order to please their Gods.

In ancient Greece, artisans create various designs that will suit both men and women as wearing jewelry became very popular. Typical designs of jewelry include the image of an eagle carrying Ganymede on top of a mountain, or various types of plants and animals found in the region. Women wore stunning necklaces, pins, arm bands, earrings, thigh bands, diadems, rings and wreaths.

These various types of jewelry can be found in temples, or buried and recently been discovered. Women also wore wigs which were lavishly decorated. A peculiar ornament women wore was the gorgerin. This is an assembly of metal discs which rested on the chest and tied at the back.

The poor people of ancient Greece are known to pierce different parts of their body in order to wear heavy and bulky jewelry. These jewelry are usually made of glass and shells. On occasion, they owned jewelry made of precious stones. The use of lapiz lazuli and turquoise was actually very popular.

Greek artisans and jewelers were extremely skilled in their work. They designed jewelry in various motifs like animals, shells, insects, and silhouettes of people. They also made mythological figures and jewelry depicting heroic scenes.

Grecian jewelry boxes for women are polished with enamel and filigree work in silver and gold. Only the Emperors of Greece could own these boxes. The commoners used enamel boxes with carved designs on them. Tin alloy or zinc alloy was also used in making jewelry boxes during those times.

Intricately hand-carved wooden chests with rich marquetry designs were quite popular then up until today. There are jewelry boxes with precious stones and lavish inlaid work done on them along with carvings of their Gods and Goddesses. One of the most famous carvings would be the one of Cupid, the God of love and romance.

One of the most popular stories in Greek mythology tells us about a woman named Pandora and her beautiful box that should never be opened. But her curiosity led her to open the box thus releasing all the evil and destruction in the world. Pandora jewelry boxes are richly detailed and lavishly designed.

As Greeks have strong faiths in their Gods, they only use embellishments that are believed to keep them safe away from evil and harm. Their jewelry with all the rich details and exciting shapes and textures are things of beauty. And their ornate jewelry boxes used to store all their precious collection can be considered as among the best in the world.

Men’s Jewelry Box and Other Things Created from Burlwood

A men’s jewelry box is commonly made of various types of wood like mahogany, teak, and oak that looks classy especially when decorated with burlwood. Straight board from these trees are actually very easy to work with but when it comes to using burlwood, it becomes more difficult. Working with burls which are usually found on many trees requires skill and craftsmanship.

In fact, extracting and removing burlwood from trees is a difficult procedure. When separating the burlwood from a tree, extra care has to be taken in order to preserve its delicate patterns. After harvesting, they have to be milled right away.

Only experts and trained artisans can create designs using burlwood. The designs are so intricate and carefully done because of the indefinite shape of burls. There are burls that can be easily carved while there are some that require special skills.

Burls are abnormal growths on trees that have matured and are undergoing some form of environmental stress. Trees that have been injured or may have contracted a virus or fungi result in some form of stress. You get burl from the root stem of mature trees.

Port McNeil in British Columbia is one excellent source of trees that have these abnormal growths. The largest burl was actually found in Taniworth in New South Wales, Australia in 1984. Burl wood is quite expensive because they are very rare. They are turned into slices of veneers before being processed to create furniture, jewelry boxes and clocks.

There are many types of burls: oak burl, maple burl, curly redwood burl, buckeye burl, myrtle wood burl, black walnut burl, and many others. The maple burls are known to have curly figures and layers of bark. Oak burls, on the other hand, come in varieties of colors that include red, black and white.

Burl designs are so intricate and varied that’s why it can be difficult to choose. They are used in making musical instruments and knife handles as well. The buckeye burl has a wonderful swirling pattern and grain that are prized by artisans.

Their color is very distinguished and they come in a variety of shades – blue, grey, black or gold. The sharp edges of these burls are cut using special tools for artisans to work with. Myrtle wood burls are commonly hollowed out in order to create flower vases and drums. They are then dyed using lacquer.

Since myrtle wood can be easily shaped, they are also commonly used in making soup and salad bowls. Black walnut burls are so versatile that they can be turned into various things like pianos and other furniture. This type of wood is known for its exotic beauty. That’s why they are also used in the creation of jewelry boxes.

Bubinga burls are used in creating watch winders, valets, etc. Another type of burl, the elm burlwood, is used in making men’s jewelry boxes. They are extremely durable and are used when creating show pieces. Redwood burl is handcrafted not only to make jewelry boxes but also side tables and all sorts of furniture.

It’s indeed a good investment to buy a men’s jewelry box made of burlwood and decorated with fine veneers made from burl. Especially if it’s something that can hold all your valuable items with expandable space for more expensive accessories. This one is something that you surely won’t regret getting for yourself.

Questions to Think About Before Choosing Jewelry Boxes For Women

Your wife or your girl friend is celebrating her special day and you’re thinking of giving her one of the best jewelry boxes for women. You may already have a budget in mind but you’re still at a loss about what to look for in a jewelry box. You know her preferences in everything but you’re not entirely sure about the perfect ornament case for her.

Here are some tips that you may want to consider before purchasing. Consider that jewelry boxes are used to keep expensive jewelry selections so you need to make sure that the box is safe and made from strong and durable materials. Try a box made from metal or rosewood because they are known to be very durable and can last very long.

Look for something that’s also big enough to store her growing collection. You probably have an idea how big her collection is so it won’t be too difficult to gauge which is the right size to get. Get something with extra space so that it will be easy for her to add jewelry in the future.

Ask yourself, will it blend well with her bedroom decor? This is also an important question to answer before getting a jewelry box. You may have found the perfect box but it may not go well with her room’s decor.

Look for something that matches her dresser or her favorite chair. Give something that’s totally unexpected if you want to surprise her. While she may not really expect a jewelry box from you, it will be extra special if you can have her name engraved on the box.

You can also have a custom-made box just for her. It may require you to spend some time and money but you are assured that it’s something that fits your specifications. Whichever type of jewelry box you get, make sure that it’s properly lined with velvet, satin or suede.

Double check the latches and clasps to see that they’re working fine. Check each drawer to make sure that they’re properly fitted in the box and doesn’t pull all the way out. The jewelry box should also be properly compartmentalized in order to ensure proper arrangements of the trinkets.

To summarize, get a jewelry box that’s well designed that can handle different types of trinkets and lined with smooth fabric and has several drawers for expansion. Also make sure that the box is durable and secure enough and something that will match her bedroom decor.

Mahogany for Some Great Men’s Jewelry Box Models

Dark colored and with several advantages to its credit, Mahogany is a Native American wood. On reaching its full potential, this rain forest tree stands as tall as 150 ft. There are several uses for it, one of which is the men’s jewelry box.

When the Mahogany reaches maturity it branches out into what looks like a canopy of sorts. The trunk grows to as wide as 6ft in diameter. The tree’s bark has a range of hues, from grey to that of brown red with fissures.

The Mahogany tree is in demand world wide to the extent that it is now on the verge of going extinct. This has already happened in some of the original ranges of the tree. The wood of mahogany comes in a palette of colors ranging from yellow to red, to some pink and salmon shades as well. These are what you will see when the wood is cut fresh.

With time and as the wood dries, it gets a touch of royal red or brown with hints of red. Mahogany’s texture is evenly interlocked and ranges from being straight to wavy and even curly sometimes. Wood that comes with irregularities in its grain is often used to make things like fiddle-back chairs.

The good thing about Mahogany is its luster when it is polished. Because this luster is so high, working with Mahogany is extremely easy and gives you some great finishes. No matter whether you are using hand tools or machines, this wood is easy to work with. The wood lends itself easily to carving and the boring of nails and screws.

Mahogany’s ability to resist rotting makes it an ideal material to build boats. Thanks to its durability, musical instruments such as the acoustic guitar and drum shells are made of this wood. Musical instruments are often made with mahogany because of the great tone it brings forward.

This is a wood that is also used in the making of furniture. More so in Victorian styled pieces that require extensive detailing. The strength and finish of the wood is what makes it perfect for furnishing of all kinds.

Architecture is another area where mahogany is extensively used. These you will find in doors, complicated molding, and even floors. The elegance of the wood is unbeatable.

You will find a number of jewelry boxes for men and women made from mahogany. Valets use this wood for its strength and the masculine aura that is attached to it. Boxes are available for every kind of need and storage requirement.

This wood is also used for veneers. The veneers are in demand for their textures, colors and the finishes they provide. Architecture aside, these veneers are extensively used in decorative arts such as Marquetry. This is where tiny bits of veneer are made use of to fill in preset designs.

Mahogany is extremely useful, thanks to its sturdiness as well as its elegance in finish. Despite being expensive, it is completely worth having.

The Best Jewelry Boxes For Women

Some ladies love gemstones, some others gold and for many, any kind of jewelry is welcome. What is as important as the ornaments is the jewelry boxes for women. They preserve and protect those precious collections for a life time.

Materials for jewelry boxes come in a wide range to suit different aesthetic and personal preferences. A jewelry box’s size and construction is dependent on the extent of the collection it has to contain. The different kinds of jewelry to be stored will also need to be taken into consideration.

For instance, you cannot store a collection of gemstones in a wooden box without a lining. Stones, if placed together in a box without a soft lining to cushion them can end up with scratches on their surfaces. In the same vein, a box that does not have compartments will end up with the stones rubbing against one another damaging their facades.

The best boxes for large collections are those made of ornately done up wood. A preferred choice for women would be an antique box that comes with compartments for a variety of jewelry. Ideally this means cup holders for rings and earrings, removable trays for necklaces, as well as rolls for watches and bracelets

Boxes made of wood are classics and there are several ways in which their lids can be decorated. Along with carving and etching, marquetry is common too. In the art of marquetry, small bits of veneer in varying colors and textures are used to fill up designs.

Leather is often used as a casing for its durability. These are ideal for storage of jewelry that is a combination of stone and precious metals. The soft casing protects jewelry from abrasion. Common colors in leather casing boxes are black, brown, tan, and their variants.

The latest in fashion trends have also made popular, colors like baby pink and lime green. Single compartment boxes are available as also those with extendable trays and lined interiors. You could also choose musical boxes according to the size of your collection. These come with little figurines on top and winding buttons behind, to get the music playing. There are various kinds with drawers, hooks, compartments and even doors to give them that unique look.

The perfect choice for women who love their jewelry on the go is a leather case. Choose from the simple rolls that holds all you need in the suitcase or the compartmentalized box that comes together with a strap. Based on the kind of accessories you want to store, boxes can vary.

Watch boxes have rolls that can hold anywhere between 4 and 10 watches. The rolls can also be removed to make space for other items that you may have. A selection of bangles can be stored on rolls in bangle boxes. Choose from single or multiple roll boxes. You could select a closed or glass covered box that will allow you to look at your jewelry.

Select your jewelry box based on the kind of ornaments you want to keep in it. This is the ideal way to keep your collection safe.

Jewelry Boxes For Women and Modern Chunky Jewelry

Women totally love chunky jewelry as it is quite fashionable. To hold these large pieces of jewelry special jewelry boxes for women had to be designed. For this type of jewelry various metals, plastic, wood and other materials are used.

Carved ones inlaid with semi precious stones and precious stones are quite popular. Gold, silver, bronze, copper, resin, rhodium, titanium, stainless steel, and oxidized metal are the commonly used metals for making jewelry boxes. To mould beautiful patterns on the jewelry easily, a mixture of five different metals is sometimes used. The five metals used are brass, copper, bronze, gold, and silver; the proportion of gold and silver are comparatively small when compare with the other metals.

There are drops that are made with big beads and floral designs of embossed enamel. The paintings are done meticulously. Earrings made of precious stones, pearls, garnets and crystals are also popular.

Head bands designed in rows of clear crystal and threaded with metal wire and encrusted with crystals and silk chiffon look gorgeous. You can go with the one with a big carved metal flower fixed in the middle of the band. Chunky necklaces are also made of leather and carved metal. These necklaces are even made of clear beads, and crystals.

Huge rings with different colors and big circumference are all threaded on silk thread and made into four layers to form the necklace. They are also interested in wearing huge bracelets made of metal and stones and crystals inlaid in it. You could also get a huge ring with your birth stone, or a fringe of stones of different colors which is the fashion now.

Other accessories like brooches and hair combs to adorn the hair are available. It holds hair up well and looks beautiful as it is inlaid with pearls and stones. The best materials for storing chunky jewelry are wood and leather where the boxes are quite spacious. The box should have a deep and hollow base where you can keep all your chains and necklaces.

You need some more compartments to keep your bangles. Make sure there is a bangle rod so the bangles don’t clash against each other. As otherwise, the bangles might lose their pendants or cause the stones to break off. To store your chunky earrings the topmost drawer should have spacious compartments. And big compartments will be needed for bracelets. To keep chains from getting entangled chain hooks should be there.

You should choose your jewelry box with care to keep your jewelry safe as well as spacious enough to store all your jewelry. Take stock of your requirements and only then set out to buy one.

Men’s Jewelry Box: Why Guys Should Have One

Many of us think that jewelry boxes are just for the ladies. But most guys may find a men’s jewelry box a useful accessory as well. If you happen to be a guy, you might be surprised to find lots of jewelry boxes for men in the market.

Do you have a collection of watches? There’s just a box that will exclusively hold and display your collection. Do you own a cellphone, MP3 player, iPod and a host of other electronic gadgets? You can also store them in a box that has a built in charger as well.

So do you still believe a jewelry box is just for the fairer sex? Call them jewelry boxes, valet boxes, accessory boxes – they all mean the same thing. But to take away from the feminine connotation, let’s just call them accessory or valet boxes.

Men should have a valet box for a number of reasons.

First, an accessory box will keep your stuff organized. You guys aren’t exactly known to be organized. Stuff like wallets or keys are left everywhere and you expect your wife or mother to pick up after you. They do have other more important things to take care of aside from you and your belongings, you know.

There’s no crystal ball, which they can use to find your stuff. And they can’t just wave a wand to make your things magically appear like a neat hat trick. That’s why a valet box is extremely helpful.

Just think. You just dump all your things in this box when you come home. No more wandering around the house trying to look for your cards, keys or phone. No more shouting to help find your wallet. They’re just all neatly stored in one box.

And do you remember the number of times you left your wedding band on the bathroom counter? If you have an accessory box, you can keep your rings, necklace, ear studs, bracelet, cufflinks and other jewelry neatly without wasting time and effort to look for them.

If you want to add some style and sophistication to your life, a valet box will be able to achieve this. It’s time to get rid of the tin can that used to hold all your belongings. Instead, go for an accessory box that will fit all your growing needs. There’s no need to worry about the designs. Men’s valet boxes are not as feminine as you once thought. Wooden and leather jewelry boxes have a very masculine appeal. They can even accentuate your bedroom, living room, or hallway.

If you’re afraid that having one will lessen your masculinity, it’s all in your head. If your buddies discover that you own a jewelry box, they will just think that you have matured into a sophisticated man. It’s time to get organized and start picking up after yourself or you might never hear the end of your wife’s or girlfriend’s nagging. You don’t want that, do you?

On a serious note, men will find a jewelry box just as important as a woman does. Women tend to keep a jewelry box for its sentimental value while men keep it for its practical and functional use.

Men’s Jewelry Box for Organizing Your Accessories

Men also use jewelry boxes like women do. Men’s jewelry box helps them keep their things organized. It can be placed on the dressing table so that it can be readily accessed.

Choose one that will be able to accommodate all your stuff after taking stock of your accessories. To accommodate several accessories like watches, rings, cuff links, bracelets, etc there are large valet boxes. To hold just rings or tie pins there are smaller chests designed.

The jewelry boxes available in the market are mostly made of wood, leather, and china enamel. China enamel ones are not preferred by many people, as makes an unpleasant sound when handled. As they were mostly used centuries ago, only antique pieces are available now.

Think of what you want to store when you decide to buy a valet. You might like to preserve a collection of yours. Make sure to choose one which is convenient to use and is spacious and secure.

Get a highly polished one which has a natural glossy shine. Both dark and light colors are available. You could also buy an ebony finished box with the interiors lined with black suede. It has many slide out drawers for chains and bracelets.

You can select a masculine color like black, tan, or green. The executive presidential chest which is made up of solid teak wood with brass hinges, lock and key and with tassel beveled edges is a good show piece. The quality of the box has got a shimmering gloss finish and has a brown stain.

Jewelry boxes designed for men are lined with ultra suede lining which is soft and supple with a sensuous touch. Another good choice would be a valet box made of dark burl wood with a walnut finish. If it has a broad elastic strap to hold your cell phone in place it would be ideal. Compartments should be separate for coolers, car keys, etc. and a ring holder for rings. It has a very handsome and elegant look and an extra shine.

There are some valet boxes that have two deep pocket sections along the back where important books like organizers, flight schedules, and telephone books can be kept. There are also the latest valet boxes that have an inbuilt charger. The box is made of some exotic wood like java wood and has a charging station for several devices like mobile phones and laptops.

In these days when being fashionable means a lot, a man will be proud to own a classy and elegant jewelry box, like the boxes described here.

Jewelry Boxes For Women: Why Antique Jewelry Boxes are Appealing

Jewelry is very precious to women so it is an absolute necessity that they are stored in the right case. However, any ordinary container won’t do. Jewelry boxes for women should not only keep your jewelry protected but they should mirror your personality.

Jewelry boxes have been with us for a long time. They can be dated to as far back as 3000 BC during the the times of ancient Egypt and Rome. They were commonly called jewelry caskets during those days.

Before the dawn of the Industrial Revolution, these boxes were made by hand out of materials like stone, wood, fabric and metals such as gold, silver and bronze. This made each one rare and unique and eventually become a collector’s item.

Ancient Egyptians were famed for their intricate boxes inlaid with ivory sheets while Asian jewelry boxes were often wrapped in luxurious silk. Boxes made by using the art of enameling over copper were popular during the Victorian era.

The enamel boxes often highlighted exquisite hand painted patterns such as flowers, landscapes and portraits. The colors of the cases were so vibrant they often retained the boldness and sharpness even as time passed.

Shorty thereafter, Art Metal Wares with an Art Nouveau style caught on fast in Europe and America which lasted until World War I before interest in fashion began to dissipate. These trinket boxes were crafted using cast metals plated with gold, silver, copper, or ivory. Women with hair flowing and floral patterns were the most common designs featured.

Many women choose to own antique jewelry boxes because they often tell an interesting story. Owning one makes you feel as if you have something that is part if history. They elicit a feeling of nostalgia and romanticism.

While they may be lacking in some of the advanced features of modern jewelry boxes, their quaint designs that are unique and elegant more than make up for it. But real antique jewelry boxes can be quite expensive. Differentiating between an authentic antique box and a replica can be hard to do because of the many mass produced imitations in the market.

To know if your jewelry box is an actual antique, it would be a smart idea to have a professional appraise it. He or she will be able to tell you how much your jewelry box is really worth.

Genuine antique pieces are not that difficult to find. You can buy them from antique shops, auctions, flea markets and even online. If a genuine antique is something you cannot afford, you can opt for a reproduction instead that can look just as real.

It is a great option that can give you that same old world charm but at a significantly less expensive price. Whether you own a true antique jewelry box or just a copy, it is still a prized possession that you can enjoy for a long time.

Mens Jewelry Box: Keeping Your Watch Collection Neat

Men look at watches the way women look at jewelry. They sometimes end up spending an arm and a leg for these watches so it is only right that they store them properly. If you have an extensive array, you will need a mens jewelry box that can hold all your watches.

More often called a watch box or watch case, this particular jewelry box is specifically made to showcase your watches and keep them safe. You can keep from one to twenty or more watches in these receptacles depending on the size of the case. There are usually several compartments with small pillows to hold the watches separately. This is great especially for watches with metal straps so you can wrap the strap around the pillow snugly and securely.

There are boxes designed to lay your watches flat instead of wrapping them around the pillow. This is ideal for watches with leather straps. Some watch cases are made with drawers that can hold spare straps, spring bars, buckles, small tools and other extra parts.

Many of the watch cases come with a clear lid made of glass or acrylic to be able to showcase your watch collection. A clear cover will help you easily identify the watch you want to wear for that day. Also, if you have a solar powered watch, the light that passes through can charge your watch.

Some watch boxes are designed with a watch winder. This is convenient because you do not have to manually wind your watch. They are, however, a little expensive.

Some individuals convert old cigar boxes into watch boxes. Dividers and slots are added to keep each watch segregated. This is an inexpensive yet creative way to come up with a unique watch box.

Different materials can be utilized when making watch boxes. Some boxes are made of wood, leather, aluminum and other metals. The most common are those made of wood and leather. Some boxes have locks and latches while others don’t. When it comes to watch boxes, the options are limitless and it can sometimes be overwhelming when you are looking to buy one.

If you want to select a perfect box to meet your needs, here are some of the things you should consider.

1. Dimensions. Each compartment should be big enough to accommodate your largest piece. Watches come in different sizes so if your biggest piece can fit the slot without touching the other watches, there will be no problems with the smaller ones.

2. Depth. Select a box with enough depth so that the lid does not hit the face of the watch when you close it. Allow for enough room between the watch and the top lid.

3. Pillows. These should be firm, oval pillows large enough to hold the watch securely. Some pillows have an outer sleeve that you can remove or attach to accommodate either a smaller or larger watch.

4. Lining. Select a lining that uses soft material such as fleece, velvet or microfiber.

If you bear these considerations in mind when choosing a watch box, not only will you be able to store and keep your watch collection safe and secure, you can also enjoy them for many years to come.

Handmade Jewelry Boxes Ideal for Your Jewelry Collection

Marquetry embellished wooden jewelry boxes are not only beautiful, but also very useful. The beauty brought by marquetry is made by numerous tiny pieces of different woods, metals and other materials that are glued together to make a stunning picture. With its intricate design and procedure, only a craftsman with extensive experience in the art will be able to produce a masterpiece.

Before French kings used marquetry in their palaces and Arabs developed it to be part of their culture, it was in Italy in the 16th century that this art form started. Opera de Commessi was the inspiration for marquetry. Since the 1980s, a technique called piercing that was made by Remy Vriez has been used by marquetry artisans and in the 2000s, the laser cutting that uses CAD software to produce veneer pieces is being propagated for its ease of use.

A wide range of materials are used in making a marquetry piece, as this allows the artisan to perfectly depict his subject. Materials such as wood, pewter and ivory are the most common, but bone, metal and other fine material can also be used.

The Para rubber tree is also known as parawood. This latex-producing tree is a member of the Euphorbiaceae family, which is still the preferred source of rubber manufacturers until today. Despite its name, its strong and durable characteristic is the main reason why furniture makers prefer to use it in their production.

After producing latex for several years, rubber trees are cut down once they stop doing so to make their wood useful in other things. This is the main reason why rubber wood is classified as an environmental-friendly material. It is the rubber wood’s sustainability that makes it the most preferred material among nature lovers.

Aside from being eco-friendly, its characteristics of having a smooth finish and little shrinkage is what makes it a viable material for furniture and jewelry boxes. It also requires little to no maintenance on its lighter grains, which enables it to give a satiny texture.

With all the above mentioned characteristics, rubber wood is really the perfect material for anything. The latex-producing rubber wood might not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of beautiful materials. Marquetry-decorated jewelry boxes will be the one to break that notion and prove that rubber wood can produce a masterpiece.
