Now that’s one heck of a BIG WATCH…,
Sorry, had to laugh at the other review for this watch; the fact that they hadn’t realised it was hand wound and no superluminova on the numbers! Anyhow, we live and learn…
Just taken delivery of this watch and the first thing to strike me was its size. This is a very big watch, and the design of the solid stainless steel case case seems to be heavily based on the IWC Big Pilot watch range. If you’re going to buy this watch, make sure you have the wrist to carry it off, otherwise it may look a bit daft! The watch has a very large crown (an onion crown I think it’s known as) which is screw down. To wind the watch, you unscrew the crown and pull this out to the first position; to alter the time, gently pull out to the second position. I must admit the mechanism felt quite strong and solid, like many of the other Russian timepieces I own.
This is a very basic watch, but I feel very classy. The cream face is complimented beautifully by the almost metallic blue numerals (and no, there’s no superluminova on these!) These numerals are slightly raised, as is the aircraft logo below the number 12. The face has Russian Cyrillic lettering at 3 o’clock also. The hands are also metallic blue in colour, and have a good strong superluminova on them. The mineral crystal glass is ever so slightly convex, which gives a slight distortion at some angles, and I feel gives the watch a classy look. I believe you can get a version of this watch with a glass display back also. There is a second counter at 9 o’clock, but no date function (which can be a pain anyway on wind up or automatic watches). The stainless steel caseback also has Russian Cyrillic lettering engraved on it, as well as an aircraft logo.
The movement is a Russian Molnija Caliber 3603(manual winding)with 18 ruby jewels and approx 41 hours power reserve when fully wound. As with all mechanical watches, you need to be aware that they are never going to be as accurate as a quartz movement. Mechanical watches can gain or lose about 40 seconds or so a day, so please dont think that there’s something wrong with the watch after a week or so, it’s the nature of the beast I’m afraid!!
All in all, a good strong Russian Aviator watch which does get noticed on your wrist. It’s individual (not like something from Argos and will last 10 times longer if looked after. You could go travelling around the world with this baby and it wouldn’t let you down, and you wouldn’t need to worry about batteries either! This is a tiempiece you can hand down to your kids. Go on, buy one, you only live once….!!
