Workhorse Zero Maintainence Watch,
How I hate British Daylight Saving times. Not only does it bring on the misery of early darkness in winter, but it also introduces the extra hassle of altering ones watch time, twice a year. If you’re going to wear a watch, it may as well be synced up with a reliable time source, so changing my watch time is always a case of phoning up the speaking clock and getting it as near as possible. That’s before we consider the other niggle of having to change the date when there’s less than 31 days in the month…especially tricky when it means pulling the watch dial just that right amount away from the casing so as not to stop the time. Pull it too far, and we’re back on the phone to the speaking clock…
They say it’s the small hassles that annoy people the most and changing watch times, calendar dates and batteries certainly grind my Grumpy Old Man gears; so wouldn’t it be nice to find a watch that:
a.) Synced up to an external time source and changed Daylight Saving Time automatically
b.) Changed the calendar date automatically
c.) Didn’t need its battery changing
d.) Wasn’t digital
e.) Didn’t look like an ostentatious bling-bling penis extension piece of jewellery
Well, this MSF watch seems to pass on all counts. The (Chinese to English translation) instructions read well enough to make set-up a piece of cake and it was syncing up to an external Atomic clock almost instantly. Being Solar powered, it takes its energy source from a few hours of exposure to daylight. No doubt the energy cell will need replacing one day, but so what? There won’t be any hassle setting the watch up again as once you kick in the simple reset routine it retrieves its settings automatically.
The calendar is displayed on a tiny digital display (I can live with that) in numerical month/date format, so for today’s date of writing, this reads (or just about squeezes on) as, 11.27. It’s a tight fit, but perfectly readable. The digital display also toggles through seconds, battery power and day display at the push of a button.
Cosmetically, this is a no-nonsense ‘man’s’ watch with a sleek stainless steel fascia and chunky leather strap. It’s not going to impress any WAG’s in your local C-list ‘celebrity’ night-spots, but that really is of no concern for my daily activities. My only minor gripe is that it’s a little deeper in the body than conventional wrist watches at 11mm thick. This is no doubt due to the internal workings of the watch and I would imagine in time, this size will reduce as technology moves on. So for that minor aesthetic flaw, it doesn’t quite get the 5 stars. But if like me, you hate the sight of bling on wrists and want set-it-and-forget-it from a wristwatch, this ticks all the boxes.

Faulty on delivery,
When this watch arrived it was immediately noticed that the top button was stuck in a jambed in position.
All attempts to free it failed.
The digital display for the date was unreadable without a magnifying glass?
Not impressed with it! Sent it straight back. Postage was not refunded.

I love the item but they are not very good,
I love the idea of a watch that never needs to be re set for summer and winter time. I love the idea of a solar powered battery that never needs to be replaced. First one was faulty, the battery went flat after two days, I did as they mention place under bright fluorescent light. Battery still never charged after 12 hours under lamp. I exchanged it for another one and this one would not sync the time, no matter what I did. Sent that one back and had my money back. Lovely idea but they don’t seem to work.
