Best ever…but no new straps?,
I bought this watch for a long trip through travelling in rough terrains in Asia. I used the compass all the time. The light was very bright and the time easy to change while jumping time zones. It also has three time modes, so it was easy to check when it was alright to call other time zones and so on….When I got back to Europe I had to recalibrate the compass, but that was very easy. The only complaint is that there do no seem to be any new straps available. I love the watch and don’t see the point of buying a new one just because of a worn strap. I might try and make due. Either way, I highly recommend this watch for anyone who travels a lot or for anyone who likes the look of a rugged watch that does not look cheap. Where to buy a new strap though?

Buttons could be (as usual) better,
(This watch was bought October 2009.)
Despite the rating, overall I am pleased with this watch. It is better to have a watch like this than to as well have to carry a compass around with you. (Not to mention that the sharp corners of the compass will wear holes in your pockets making you lose your keys. Not something that would want to happen near a drain. So this watch is a real lifesaver for reasons not intended by the manufacturers.).
The compass is the first of the features. To access it one presses the lower left (Mode/Next) button once. The display shows in degrees the direction the watch is pointing. (0 degrees is North, 90 degrees is East, etc.) Around the rim of the display you will see the head (on one side) and tail (on the other) of an arrowhead. This points North.
Recalibrating the compass becomes relatively easy once you have tried it a few times.
The buttons (except the one for the light) are large enough not to hurt your finger too much when pressing them although they would be better still without the orange stripe/depression running along the middle of them.
There is a choice of three alarms each having a melody with a different level of
“distractedness”. I particularly like the melody for the second alarm.
Having said this, there are some irritating aspects of the watch:
The raised rim surrounding the buttons is too high making it more difficult to press them. Dust can also accumulate here which might get into the watch.
Occassionally when you press one of the lower buttons it skips a step (as if the button had been pressed twice).
To set the alarm you have to go through all the other features that the watch has first. i.e. there are 7 steps before you reach the first alarm (or 9 steps for the third alarm). You also have to remember what feature is before the first alarm or else you will overshoot it (this is after you have learnt that pressing the button faster gets you there quicker). This might be why there are three alarms.
It is possible, of course, to hide most or all of these modes and the instruction guide tells you how to do this. However, first you have to know that it is possible to do this (something this reviewer didn’t).
And should you ever want any of these features back it is difficult to remember how to do this (or find the instruction guide) (or read it without your reading glasses which you then have to find…). My advice is do not remove the compass if you are heading into the desert.
