Blood, sweat and tears with a pinch of good, old high school politics- welcome to the dog eat dog world of law school. College was tough, but law school is brutal!
The journey usually starts of in one of three ways: you want to go to law school because:
- you are burdened by your family tradition of doing law.
- You dream of helping people with a sense of right and wrong (which you wont even remember upon graduation)
- You want to have loads of money, a fancy office, and in addition to your huge house you want a summer home near the beach.
If you fall under category one and you are smart, law school wont be difficult as your education will be paid for. Those unfortunate enough to fall in category two and three, will most probably lose all their inhibitions and will be broke and over burdened by student loans by the time they graduate.
When I was in law school the skin on the laptop of the girl next to me had a curly girl designs that said Life is tough, I recommend getting a manicure and a really cute helmet. That saying was true, I just didnt realize it until the end of the first year. The students were over worked, sleep deprived, dreary, sulking whilst heading to class ready to witness the wrath of our hyper over gesticulate tort professor for even the smallest of mistakes while answering a questions. Truly terrifying. And not to mention the extensive reading list, tons of books and hundreds of statutes to know and refer to along with coping with the law school curse which can affect relationships not only while in school but also the rest of our lives; after all lawyers have one of the highest divorce rates in the US.
In addition to the work load, students deal with the politics, competitive behavior, and revival of the gossip culture like high school. The major characteristics include small things being blown out of proportion, whispers, and the division of students into clich©s.
You will be tested as your life will spiral out of control with deadlines, the pressure of a competitive environment and the constant threat of law school politics. For those who make it to the end and mint money, the experience is definitely rewarding.
