Now that you have found the perfect woman for you, and are preparing to propose to her, you must find the right engagement ring. While the process of shopping for a diamond engagement ring can be daunting, you can be certain that you will have many rings to choose from. You just need to take that first step to begin the search.
One of the first decisions that you have to make is what your budget is for the engagement ring. Everyone has his own ideas about how much he should spend on this purchase, and there used to be a jeweler’s rule-of-thumb that said you should spend up to three times your monthly salary on the engagement ring. In reality, you have to look at your own financial situation and determine what you can afford to spend. The last thing you want to do is to start your marriage deeply in debt because you bought a very expensive diamond engagement ring that you couldn’t really afford.
Thanks to the Internet, it is also possible to find artisans, craftsman and jewelry makers online. These individuals are often only making a handful of diamond engagement rings and, as a result, you might just be able to find an engagement ring with a very distinct look. If you think your fiance would be interested in a more unique looking ring, this could definitely be the way to go. And there is the added benefit of knowing you are helping a small businessperson at the same time.
An option that you might not have considered is to use a family ring as the engagement ring. This could be the engagement ring that your grandfather gave your grandmother, and you want to keep it in the family by presenting it to your fiance. Besides being a very heartfelt option, this is one way to save some money. A compromise on this approach might be to take the setting from a family member’s ring and purchase a new diamond for it; or in reverse, take the diamond from your grandmother’s ring and have a new setting created for your fiance.
Another option that you might be able to consider is a family heirloom ring that could be used to serve as an engagement ring. For some families, there is a tradition of handing a ring down through the generations. Even if this is not true in your family, it never hurts to explore the possibility of starting such a tradition with a ring that belongs to a family member. Starting such a tradition would give your fiance an endearing story to tell.
